groups of people who team up for events such as the CCC
some clans also team up for the CTL, tho this is not a 'clan' event
some clans have a 'code' they follow, while others are more generally a group of players who like playing with each other - oo er missus

Clans are like fraternities/sororities in college. They are associations of like-minded people who enjoy socializing and competing together. You don't have to join one - but to some it enhances the gaming experience.
You can usually tell a clan person by their "tag" - for example I usually appear as {ZIP}SirPartyMan_C3P when in GameSpy. This identifies me as belonging to the ZIP clan.
Get to know these people and at some point you could inquire about membership. Some clans have a membership procedure. Others recruit in different ways. No two clans are exactly alike, which is a good thing, in my opinion.
Only one tournament a month is reserved for clan only participation - that's the CCC (Clan Championship Cup). In other tourneys you might see clans sign up as a team, but the tourneys are open to all players.
People sometimes leave clans and rejoin others. I've belonged to 3 different clans over about the last 12 months. Not sure if that's typical or not.
Clans are self-governing. We have no "rules" about clans. And admins enforce rules on individuals, never on clans.
Hope that helps ...
SPM
PS: When I wrote this I belonged to the ZIP clan which no longer exists. I am now with ICE.

Again - are we having a sudden rash of newbies which merited this now? I'm not seeing a dozen new names popping up posting on the boards; that's why I'm asking.

Gah! I think I transmitted something unintentional there - I was literally just curious about the timing. Struck me as odd. I don't have any problem with it there. ::retops it::

I was sexyblitzer before, but still I'm a noob. Howdy hoe! Looking for a clan, not looking for a "noob-clan" though. I use to play with serious people. I'm not sure which clans are good for me. So many out there...
