If the worker creates unhappy citizens, you might see points decline Just make them entertainers, not as many points as happy people, but still points.

I'll never forget the first time It was 20 turns from the end and I had a 40 pt lead over someone, only to watch it vanish and him to win by one point at the end, the dissapointment here was matched only by the wry enjoyment I got from doing the same thing 2 weeks later to another noob, here's how it's done. Get a nice stash of cash towards the end, then when the game declares that there are twenty turns to go or whenever you feel the game is likely to go to points really- you may have already developed in the way Sir Party man has pointed out, but most likely you'll have built a bit closer than suggested, either way the point is you'll have a good number of cities- nows the time to put luxuries on 100% or as high as it can go cash devided by the no of turns remaining, irrigate some more land expand cities as fast as possible build temples, even libraries, cathedrals, a few extra cities, provided they can be defended is wise, sell barracks and other extraneous improvements like walls( only if you don't think you'll need them, to raise a bit more cash for the luxury level).
About 6 or 7 turns from the end or whenever you feel workers wont influence growth, use them to build cities your score really will start rocketing from the turn your luxury rate is increased, beware though any player worth his salt knows this too, so if you think the guy's gonna beat you on score, just hammer him with a nice stack:)
I'll never forget the pleasure I got from having the noob say, that was wierd how could you get that score so fast, and the dissapointment of saying it myself:)

The best was to win a point race imo is to kill your left an right neighbour and than build cities towards the captured ones Your points will skyrocket - things like builkding temples or so are just a small nothing compared to having all land
