There seems to be another bubble of new players again. I've seen some of these make some pretty basic mistakes. My adivce:
Read the Epistles of Fried.
Don't irrigate grassland while in Despotism. It is a complete waste of worker energy, the tile gains nothing.
Get cities built faster. It seems like some noobs employ a bunker strategy right from the beginning. The better veteran players will get the second, third, and fourth city out fast. Occasionally you will be killed early by doing this; but the vast majority of time it will work and keep you in the race.
Reinforce the perimeter. You will seldom be attacked in your capital. Get your defense in the satellite cities.
Use a sentry net. Post cheap units in the frontier to avoid surprise attacks. This goes for boats as well as land units.

Other basic stuff..
Dont let exposed workers get captured, especially early. Move it back into the city if you have too. This kills ur expansion, production and commerce. and hurt yoru ability to reisforce. Sometimes one will attack a unit guarding a worker and capture it, but dont leave it in the open.
Build barracks. No stacks of regular swords on turn 60.
Dont run out of money. At the very end of the game this doesnt matter. But losing ur barracks in the middle of a game as a result is a bit no-no.

also remember... abuse the landscape too your own advantage.... got a 1 2 3 or even 4 field wide strip too an enemy and loads off free land all around you.. make a "wall" off units fast soo you can build fast and undisturbed
but what do i know im just a noob

if you want permanent sentries, spears with archers (later in the game) fortified on the most defensible land you can find, will most definitely hurt to kill. if you're greece, it will take a bloody huge effort to bring them down.

or carthage, those mercs are better then hops, stats are: 2.3.1, a ahcher fused with a hop =0
