I've also just discovered that while the manual(page 67) indicates that as long as you have DirectVoice Enabled(it doesn't tell you how to do this) that you can Voice chat. It doesn't even tell you what key to use, although in PTW it was the TAB key.
Problem is that the conquests.ini has Voice Quality=0 as default. This turns voice chat off. I recommend a setting off 3 to start and work up or down from there as required by your connection.
If anyone wants to test this I'm available most week nights after 5pm est.
CS
P.S. Here's the instructions on enabling DirectVoice from the PTW readme file: Voice Chat Troubleshooting:
DirectVoice must be enabled on your machine by running the "Voice Test Wizard" (just once). You can do this directly from the <Control Panel> and <Sounds and Audio Devices Properties>. Select <Test hardware> from the <Voice> tab. As a convenience, the game will launch this Wizard automatically when you select <Multiplayer> from the main menu if <Voice Quality> is non-zero.
For the curious, following are the compression codecs used and their bandwidths: (0) ** DIRECT VOICE DISABLED ** (1) Voxware VR12 1.4 kbit/s (2) Voxware SC03 3.2 kbit/s (3) Voxware SC06 6.4 kbit/s (4) TrueSpeech(TM) 8.6 kbit/s (5) Microsoft GSM 13.0 kbit/s (6) Microsoft ADPCM 32.8 kbit/s (7) Microsoft PCM 64.0 kbit/s
Microphone Boost
Many sound cards have an option called "Microphone Boost" or "Mic Boost." This feature boosts the input volume so that weak input devices can produce stronger input. If you determine that the input level from a system is too low for your voice session, you can enable microphone boost.
To enable microphone boost
Display the recording mixer, as described in the previous section. Enable the Advanced buttons on the mixer by choosing the Advanced command from the Options menu. Click the microphone line's Advanced button to display the microphone's Advanced Controls dialog box. Select the Microphone Boost check box. If microphone boost makes your input too loud, you can use the same procedure to disable microphone boost. If your sound card does not support microphone boost, one or more of the following will be true.
The Advanced command on the recording mixer's Options menu will be unavailable. The Advanced button in the recording mixer's microphone section will be unavailable. The Microphone Boost check box on the Advanced Control dialog box will be unavailable.

Good wokr guys. PTW was notorious for 80% and ,yes, 70% land mass for island(starting spots) with 8 players(perhaps less)on the pan settings...
Question: are we sugesting that all players have 'otto' save ON for C3C games for oos situations?
Thank You

Yes, I would say that unless you have a really slow comp that you leave autosave on. It's a local(your comp) operation so it isn't going to effect lag unless your comps maxed out for resources.

BTW, I tested voice chat tonight with a BA QA staffer and it does work with the TAB button after you set up your mic/sound card in windows.
One note, if you don't have winXP then you don't have a "Voice Test Wisard" but if you enable your mic in the Sound properties then you can use "dxdiag"(type that in the Run dialog box), the DirectX Diagnostics has a voice test function.

Well I've seen this several times and reports from other players so it must be a problem. Has anyone seen the "host remains in game" message? It seems it has something to do with a conflict between being(or has been) in GS and C3C lobby at the same(or close) time. It happens when you try to host a game in the C3C lobby. Restarting the C3C MP seems to erase the problem but it's annoying none the less.

Yup, CS, I've seen it. It says "host remains in Gamespy". I eventually uninstalled GS and haven't had the problem since.

Conquests erases the score of anyone eliminated in the game, PTW did not. It would be nice to see that again and lock at score at time of elimination instead of decreasing as time goes bye.
The "Locked Alliance" feature would be nice if it could be used during set up. Would make a nice team option.
I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again.

If you run your display at higher than 1024x768 you need to add a video statement to ptw.ini.
If you don't you run into issues with the display of the startup logo and perhaps later ... not sure. This came up during the beta too so I was told to add video=1280 (my resolution) and it resolved it.

OK... Here is a problem that needs to be fixed immediately or is goin to cause allot of people from quiting civ games altogether. I personally have lost almost 15+ hours do to this problem and have had to scrap 6 games and one epic. The problem being when the gaame OOS's you cannot reload the game. Everytime you try and load it no matter what turn you try and load the game shuts off for the host. Changin host does not work either. This problem needs to be rectified immediately. This cannot continue. I notice this mostly with 8 player games but have seen it happen in 6 player games as well. I WILL WARN YOU DO NOT TRY AND PLAY 8 PLAYER GAMES> You will be setting your self up for failure. I have played 50+ games as of yet and the 8 player won't reload problem has occured 7 times. That is not very good odds. FP SPM any other adsmin. Please forward this problem to firaxis immediately and request this to be fixed asap please. All other problems that this game has is remedial compared to this one. I await a response to this problem and hope that it can be fixed. Disgruntled and not happy, Cob

I have already alerted Firaxis to this with the words "Crash Bug" (highest and most serious priority) in the email, and I sent it to someone who will not be happy to see those words. Any/all information you can give me on this: how to repeat it, what the connections of the players were, the # of players, the reason for the reload, precisely when it happened - even mundane details may be useful. Savegame files wouldn't hurt either - but please be careful that all your information is completely accurate, as the biggest part of fixing these things is being able to reproduce them under testable conditions. Fear not, Cobra - that one (in my largely unqualified opinion) will probably be VERY high on the fix list.

I am hoping someone can detail a trouble shooting guide for high lag games. The typical reload or change of hosts seems to no avail. I wonder about other methods I have seen but don't want to go through unecessary hoops if someone has information on this.
A related request: I understand some system resources are used by some programs even when they are closed. I would appreciate directions to determine this and disable some programs that load at startup. (Running ME with all updates) Thanks to all

OK FP. Unfortuantely all i have current from a save that won't load is one that is from an epic game but i will send that to you. Also most follow an oos. There have been several oos that have been unexplained. Most have occured with 8 people on a standard size map size of 70%. All connection have been dsl or higher. (Refuse to play games with dial up) Seems to appear on the Host file. Unfortuantely if the host loads the turn i believe that it somehow infects anyone elses saves as well. I have tried multiple times using all auto save files that i have from the first to that last and on 2 occasions the 3 turn worked. The 5 other times no load would work. On one of the times me being host i receive a window boz from civ that i had never seen before. The first line said something about data being corrupt. Then the line that i remembered was " Game cannot end. Missing file" then immediately shut down. Once again on this occurance i could not reload. Shutdown everytime. Now i have tried to load these game crash bugs with just myself and it has been fine. I even had 3 people reload once and it worked. But if you try and reload it with the 8 it will not work. I shoulda took the time to load it with one person at a time but hindsight is 20/20. Next time this occurs i will do so just for knowledge sake. I had begun to think that it was only me as the host til it occured in a few games that i wasn't the host. Then heard from multiple other people that this has been happening. Unfortunately not being much into beta i cannot get in the game and see why these crashes are taking place. There has not been one stand out reason that i have witnessed yet. The crashes appear to me to be random. Although i am inclined to believe that their is a file missing or somehow one if the files are coprrupt since i recieved that window box. Please let me know if this has happened to anyone else. Next time it occurs (which i hope it doesn't) i will take a screen shot of it and forward it to you) I will do all i can to help out Cob

I've got the last 12 or so auto saves from our Epic Cobra. I'll do some testing with them, as I was never host. And see what happens.
