make sure prior turn you set unit to automove. Pressing cntrl-u will make it automove at beginning of turned as opposed to after all other units have moved. Pressing G allows you to reinforce any square within distance of unit....pressing cntrl-g and selecting city you want unit to reinforce allows it to reinforce from one tile away.

manual move is always faster, click on unit and move with keyboard

ctrl shift g lets u reinforce while city is under attack. u can only add 1 unit at time so u got to find city fast and keep hitting it.

While CTRL-U is great, you should also be aware that sometimes you have a potential city defender one tile away from city (or two tiles away if horse, etc) but not on a road. In that case, use the GUI buttons and click on GOTO button and then click name of the city (the one which you wish to defend). It will move that unit even while a stack attack is underway. This topic is thoroughly discussed in the following thread in ADVICE TO NEW PLAYERS: civ3players.proboards70.com/index.cgi?board=NEWBIE&action=display&thread=1082408405SPM
