Im an old time civ player but new to online playing. I am interested to know if there is a type of play where players are allied against other players. If so...are there any specific rules to keep the game as honest as possible. I like the team aspect very much, but am not sure if this type of play is acceptable.

Welcome into civ mp world. It's totally new world for you. Usually there is 3 different types of games we play. FFA is free for all where diplomacy and everything else is allowed. In cton each players will play for themself and diplomacy isn't allowed.
Teamgames are great game format. Usually you will see someone hosting ladder teamgame in lobby. Sometimes for new players it's hard to get into one of these as new players sometimes unbalance teams. Basically when teamgame is starting players decide teams in setuproom. Everytime players will try to get as balanced teams as possible to have fair game. When game then starts, teams communicate and try to play against other teams. Big team events like Clan Challenge Championships are full of team events where you can play with your clan friends against other clan teams.

Teamers are fun, and you might even grow as a noob while playing. And learn some stuff. In one of my first teamer the other team wanted to crush me fast since I was close to them and a weak noob. So I put up some of the tricks I read here on the forum, and then the hotshots couldn't kill me. Then one of my mates had time to build up and killed them with a stack-o-doom. The role as a punching bag in a teamer can be quite exciting. Especially when your team ultimately wins. ;D

The important factor in team games is for each player to recognize his role. That's quite true. In some games the captain is good at telling members "you cover there, and you there, and you just try to survive" etc. but in other teamers it may feel like there is no coordination and that your alone. Finding your role in a teamer can be easier if there is good teamwork.

It would not hurt to download the A-E:1-9 grid mod. You will undoubtedly meet players who give locations based on it.
