Okay i've seen enough newbs screw this up...
Standard tactics: Start by muting the enemy team, tell your teammates your location and cordinate research based on locations.
Don't research anything outside of cb/pot/wc/hb/mason/bw/iw/alpha/writing/phil/maps and sometimes literacy, if you are not going straight for phil, skip it and go straight for maps. It never pays off to research the medevil ages. At the end of the game you shouldn't care if you are losing 120gpt or 60gpt. Plus you screw up upgrade tactics, by spending your cash on science.
Here are the basics for the civ picks and what you are "suppose" to do.
There are only 10 civs I would recommend playing. All the others are sucky.
Aztecs:
Should be played by a guy with a least a little bit of experince.
Primary mission: Build a small stack of jags quickly(5-10) and kill the closest enemy, try not to let him see you.
Secondary mission: Establish contact with your teammates
If you fail the primary mission see zulu tactics.
Sumeria:
Should be played by one of the guys with most experince usually.
Primary mission is to choke the closest enemy with as many enkidus as possible (swarm him with those buggers!). Your defence at home should be very thin, unless of course you are in an exposed position (the middle). The key for your mission to succeed is for the enemy to be halted productionwise, while you expand like crazy and build up stack big enough to kill him. Sit on shielded grass and other shielded tiles with enkidus to really hurt the enemy.
Secondary mission is to score points like crazy.
Celts:
Should be played by the guy with most experince.
This is the "key civ" in anc teamers, especially the 4v4's. If you have iron close you can win almost any game.
Primary mission: Build warriors (lots of em), receieve money from teammates (who have not spent it on useless lux or useless techs), upgrade warriors to gallics and kill people.
Secondary mission: Score points, if you don't have iron then build pyramids for golden age. Since you are the most dangerous civ you are also the biggest target for the enemy. They will do almost anything to stop you, or at least they damn well better try.
Iroq:
Can be played by most.
Primary mission: hook horses, build 8-10 chariots, upgrade to mw, build another 10 mws in ga. Trigger ga right after you've gotten your first mw, and try to kill someone. Waiting too long will only make the enemy stronger as you just need warriors to kill mws. This is a good civ to kill the choked civs, with not too many roads.
Secondary mission: Score points, and maybe do alpha-writing-phil-maps.
Inca:
Can be played by most.
Primary mission: This is a split civ between aztecs and zulu. You are not really as dangerous as aztecs, so you are more lilely to take the choker position. Sit on hills/mountains and make the enemy protect his roads, knowing that a stack could show up at any moment.
Secondary mission: Establish contact to teammates.
Zulu:
Can be played by most.
Primary mission: CHOKE! Your mission is to screw up the nearby enemy as much as possible. So the "killer" civs can kill him easily. Walk around his area, sit on tiles. Make him attack you with archers or other crap then flee, heal and start over. Every time he attacks you with an archer, you are likely to flee or beat the archer and have the option to flee.
Secondary mission: Establish contact to teammates.
Egygt:
Can be played by anyone.
Primary mission: Pray for horses, if you do get horses you get the War Chariot, which is close to being the ultimate anc unit (enkidu and gallic are better). The cost of the wc makes it the easiest unit to make the "Stack of Doom" with.
Secondary mission: If you don't get horses, try to take someone down with you, cause you are most likely to die or suck.
Maya:
Can be played by anyone.
Primary mission: Pray for a res, javelins are only for ga or times when you don't have res, they really do suck. If you do get res, try to do upgrade trick and kill someone.
Secondary mission: Seeing as you got the best traits you can easily score big. Be aware the other civs know you are gonna suck if you don't have a res and try to kill you.
Persia:
For the newbies.
Primary mission: Pray for iron, if you don't get iron you have really f**ked yourself by picking this civ. This is the hardest of the 10 civs to get ga with, since you need 2 wonders (which basically makes it not worth the trouble). If you do get iron do mass warriors and upgrade and try to kill someone, or at least get rid of the chokers who are very likely to be on you very early since your production is gonna suck compared to theirs and they don't want to fight immotals.
Secondary mission: Uhmm try to survive if you don't have iron, or at least drag someone down with you.
Babylon:
For the newbies.
Primary mission: It's almost impossible to die using bowmen, but it's also very hard to kill anyone with em. Try to survive and get ga around turn40 for optimal conditions.
Secondary mission: Score whatever limited points you can and drag someone down with you if you have to die.
My favorite line up is:
Aztecs-celts-inca-maya
vs
Sumer-zulu-iroq-egygt
Try not to let the other team get zulu, aztecs and inca. Makes it harder for earlier contact and you are at great risk of being gangbanged by 2 players early.
When playing agri civ make damn sure you plant near lake or river. I can't count the amount of times i've seen you damn newbs plant 1 square off the tile with river or lake.
This is all very generally speaking and can't be applied for every game. But in most games it should be correct approach. This is my personal experince, so i'm sure some of you (non-agri newbs) might disagree with me.
