Microsoft Windows XP provides Internet security in the form of a firewall, known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Normally this is a good thing as it prevents scanning of ports and resources from external sources. However, it interferes with the game, so ...
1) In Control Panel, double click "Networking and Internet Connections" and then click Network connections.
2) Right click the connection on which you would like to disable ICF (it probably says something like HighSpeed internet connection), and then click "Properties".
3) On the "Advanced" Tab, click the box to clear the option to "protect my computer or network". You want the box UNCHECKED.

I would like to point out that disabling the firewall in XP DOES allow you to host, provided that your ISP or Broadband/Cable modem doesnt have a router or has a configurable router. My ISP closes ports needed to host games, and no matter how much I plea with them, they wont open those ports. They call it "SOP" standard operating procedure. I call them "SOBs"
XP is great for something, Im sure, I just haven't found out just what that something is. I have recently run into another problem with XP, where it creates a duplicate of my internet connection, calls it "OLD", and changes my saved password and log-on name. This means that every time I log onto the internet I have to go into my connections, delete this "clone", and change the settings of the original all over again. I use the internet about 10-15 times a day, and this is really freakin annoying.
Someday that Bill Gates fellow will crap out something that doesnt mess with my head, but until that day arrives, I curse XP.

If you have high speed why are you disconnecting? Get a free copy of ZoneAlarm and just stay connected.

I cant stay online all day cuz my modem would most likely catch fire and burn down my building, creating a domino effect that would end up bad for me.

Question: When I try to create a game in gamespy arcade it says "Proxy or Firewall Detected.
GameSpy Arcade has detected that your computer's internal IP address (192.168.1.127) is different than its external IP address (65.96.58.70). This may be caused by firewalls, a NAT proxies, or other unusual network configurations and may prevent you from hosting a game. Please see our Firewall Guide for further information. You can access it by choosing "Help with GameSpy Arcade" from the Help menu."
Should I make the internal and external ip address the same, and if so how do I do that?

What kind of connection do you have?
And do you have a router?

High speed connection, and I do have a router. It's a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router, Model BEFW11S4.

I would (and do) go a step further and diable the service as well go Start -> programs -> administrator tools -> services and find the win xp firewall service and stop it and set it to manual or disable.

One caveat, that only works if you are an administrator of your system, if your a limited user, you will not be able to do that. CS
