I see a lot of people asking questions on how to play with us, and some terrible efforts on the part of ladder guys to help them. civ3players.proboards70.com/index.cgi?board=TECHIE&action=display&thread=1157135058 (wish there was a way to make this easier to remember as the guys in civ3 lobby cant copy paste and would be hard to write down such a ridiculous link)
Step 1
You need the correct patch of game. This can be found in the lower left corner of game when you enter the menu screen. 1.22 is the updated patch. If you don't have it go to www.civ3.com. Click "Patches", then click "Download the v1.22 Patch for Conquests" Pop up comes up.... click "Run".
Step 2
"I don't know how to pm (private message) for pw (passworded games)." The lobby seen thru disk is called the c3c (civ 3 conquests) lobby. This lobby is for joining games in. When you wish to join a game, do it here, thru the lobby that pops up when you hit "Multiplayer" then "Internet". But this lobby is limited in that you can't private message, and you can't see lobby while you join a game. To duplicate this lobby we use GameSpy. You can download this through your disk during install (but if you're here you already passed that point), so you can go to www.gamespyarcade.com to download it. Go to that link and hit "Download now". Then click on the link that says "Ad Supported". This is free and will give you an advertisement at start-up.... no biggie. You then want to have GS (gamepsy) to search for installed games. This will automatically search your system and find all GS supported games you have installed.
Step 3
Joining through GS. After you have completed the steps above, you can now join lobby through GS. This is how we prefer to view lobby. You start up GS, and make a login-name (you want this to be slightly different then the name you are going to use for ladder/games. For instance, if you want to use Leroy Jenkins to play ladder and games with, then you want your GS name to be slightly different, ie. Leroy-Jenkins-GS. The reason for this is because if the names are the same the lobby can't distinguish them and you may not receive pm's. From here you can click on Civ Conquests button on the right side of your screen under "My Games" (It will be a blue button with red writing that says "Civilization" barely ledgible and "Conquests" even less readable depending on your screen resolution). Then you are going to hit "main lobby" (if an ad pops up between these steps, just x (close) out of it.) Wallah! you are now in lobby thru GS. You can switch between GS and C3C lobbies by using the command alt-tab. Remember pm and watch lobby thru GS.... but join games thru C3C lobby. If they made it this far without THIS instructional in lobby, you can now give them link on top of page, in gs lobby, and tell em to pick up from here (Step4)
