A lot depends on the rules.
If you are playing regular scoring (ugh) agri is very powerful. If you are playing no war until 500 BC (ugh again) you don't want an ancient civ because your uu will be obsolete before you can use it.
The best epics are war any time and VP scoring. I believe the most important traits are industrial, religious, commercial, and seafaring. Expansionist is nearly worthless unless you just want to win on the first benchmark. I don't think agri or scientific are very good in an epic with VP scoring because both these traits boost regular score. Although scientific will get you libraries sooner and bump your tech at each era change. Military is just about worthless in an epic with any rules.
Industrial is very good because the increased worker production helps a lot. With a big empire you can make your improvements with fewer workers allowing you to use your resources for production or technology. And it really pays off when it becomes railroad time.
Religious is good because if you go all the way in an epic you will go through 3 era changes. Not being religious means you will spend a dozen or more turn in anarchy with no production.
Later in the game naval warfare plays an important role and a seafaring civ has an edge.
Again, later in the game with a huge empire commercial helps a lot with reduced corruption.
The other factor to consider is the timing of your GA. The best time for the GA is just when you max out on cities for the land that you have. It's good for 20 turns and pays bigger dividends when you have 20 cities than when you have 5.
Considering all this, my candidates for epic civ picks are:
Carthage China Egypt Ottomans India France Spain
These would be my choices for an epic that has players who I would expect would play the game all the way. Unfortunatly, a lot of epics die because one or more players become noncompetitive and they quit. If I suspect that the epic will die early I'll pick Maya or Celts in the hopes of doing well on the first couple of benchmarks.

Personally i do like sci as a trait in an epic. Also using VP kinda makes the agri trait a little ess of a must.My choices of civs would be Sumeria Ottomans Babylons Egypt Byzants
Ive used each of these in various epics and done pretty well with them.It is all personal choice what civ u feel comfertable using.

As for your tech line, get out of despotism ASAP. The government you choose depends on the epic and the land. No War with alot of available luxs is good for Republic. War from start with few luxs and alot of rivers is perfect for Monarchy. Fuedalism is only really good if you have alot of available land and few cities that will go over size 6 without an aqueduct. I usually beeline for monarchy as it has the Hanging Gardens which is a good early game wonder.
Another important point is to get an ally ASAP. Dividing up the tech research goes a long way to getting a jump on the competition.

My suggestion for useful - and funny civs in epics (no, I don't like agricivs, too easy ) Greece Germany Babylon India Those 4 are my normal prefered choises. If we lower us self to taking the best civs it would be: Celts Aztecs Maya Netherlands

The best civ for epics in my experience is (surprise!) the Mayans. I have absolutely dominated epics where I've used them.
I'm with Ktulu though - I like to play civs that are more of a challenge to play and I prefer to try a new one almost every time I play an epic.
The bottom line is this: Almost any civ can be played effectively in an epic. It's best to tailor your strategy to that civ's traits and your land situation.

Greece is one of my favorite Epic civs. You have an early UU that will last you into the middle ages. So more than likely you'll get your GA early. But later in the game, your Commercial trait starts to kick in and you'll notice the extra gold. Extra gold coupled with the Scientific trait will allow you to dominate the tech race.
I like Ottomans & Babylonians too. Celts, Maya, etc are great but I'm tired of all the Agri civs.

I have found you can go to Rep too soon though, even with lux's. If you are in Full REX mode with many small cities, unless you have NO military (unadvisable unless you know your oppenent cannon reach you with galleys), Your research will grind to a halt while you expand.
