I believe that the no animation fix was a temporary fix and that it was put back in as the programmers found a different way of addressing lag, but we will find out soon enough.

I hope you are right, Canuck. The ladder has two basic types of players: builder/defenders and aggressive warmongers. Either strategy can work depending on circumstances. If a huge stack can attack on one turn the tables will be turned in favor of the warmongers. I would hate to see all of the rich features and and tactics in the game wasted if it just turns out whoever hooks up iron first always wins.

It doesn't turn the tides, it just means an adjustment needs to be made. There are lots of ways to counter attackers that double-move at end of turns and come in at high speed; sentinel nets (Watch Towers on plains give 2 squares of sight, hills 3, and mountains 4! holy cow!) are one - the new improved archers counterattacking stacks as they arrive is another.
There are also other benefits for builders in Conquests - not the least of which is the scientific leader.

I don't know Fried. I'm skeptical of all this. I'm afraid that more often than not, players won't have time to get this defensive framework in place. You'll be off somewhere else moving your scout, then "BAM!" - you have suffered a humiliating conquest defeat. The double move is already enough of a terror in PTW. Mo

Wow no animation is huge. This means the fatkid will die....alot! without maps until navigation, attacks will literally come out of nowhere, keeping centrally located reserves no longer will work, you wont be able to get them in quick enough. Youll need to spend the first turns scouting and setting up your nets and losing early points is devastating for the builders. Our war monger brethren are drooling all over themselves thinking of the possibilites...hell they dont defend anyway. should be interesting!

I really think this is all getting upset over nothing but an evolution of the game, but time will tell. With all due respect, I think it just means that people who never believed in sentinel nets before will have to do a little watching now. ::shrug:: In any case, it is what it is, and we'll all need to cope.
Bear in mind that elimination no longer need be 1-city (in fact I'll probably never play 1 city elim again) and that even elimination is horribly outmoded now by Victory Point wins - so who cares if you lose a city temporarily? Keep your forces centered, and then shatter the army that took the town while they're weak and at low health. Horsemen that have just taken a town are wounded, use their mighty 1 defense, and won't retreat - sounds like an ideal situation to me.
And anyone who is getting "ambushed" by swordsmen REALLY needs a lesson in sentinel making.

And I've said it once and I'll say it again: Taking a size 1 city on the edge of your opponent's empire says jack about your skill if you were only able to snap that city up because ninety of his units are poised to shatter every inch of your infrastructure in a few turns. Life is not a "stop motion" event - neither should be civ. Or do you suggest that Japan won World War II because they took the Aleutians first?

Well,, if Japan took Washington DC (also on the edge of america) they very well might have won the war bump bumpity bump So we cant trade maps till navigation? This,, coupled with no more free cities on someone elses borders really immensely adds to the value of being expansionistic. I might even be an exp civ BTW fried,, bravo on your use of sux0r in the technical thread,, I dont think many here knows what that is tho lol, .. Weve played mmorpg's tho

OK I've now experienced the "disabled animation" combat. It's not quite as bad as I thought. Swissy may have been exaggerating a sliver when he said that 20 units can now attack in the time it used to take one unit to attack. There definitely is a difference though. It's maybe 8-1 or something like that. I think there may be enough time to get a few units into your city during an attack, although I haven't had the chance to test this in-depth yet. I think that, overall, I like this change. No more taking 2 or 3 turns for a stack to attack. ;D

Tried a MP game last night as the Byzantines and I have to say that I'm not particularly impressed. The Dromon - oh it's nice. This is the ultimate early ruler of the seas. It's a very, very nice boat. Moves 4 spaces (because of the Seafaring trait) and has the naval bombard option. The problem with this civ is the traits. Seafaring (of course) and Scientific (yuck). There's just not enough here to justify using this admittedly nice naval UU. Mo

Well I think that scientific as trait is now much better then it has been. They will get scientific leader more often. Also they will get extra science from scientists. It's not bad at all. What comes to other traits, ind isn't anymore so important. No more 100% bonus for workers. Now when we can't change maps in teamgames it's very important that civ got scouts. But they won't get anymore those lovely popupcities
