Dr shot, there are so many opinions about whats good and whats a loser civ, so when we start a game, some people go totally insane in the picking season, and I get so confused cause everybody is jabbering all kind of stuff. I'd rather trust what you guys have been posting in here. Thanks a lot!

I also like the javelins, they are cool in war, but they are so expensive. I must agree that those impis rock. Yesterday I got impi-blocked from my walled city, and killed cause i could not reinforce.
TEXTJavs expensive, easy to fix that dont build one till turn 45, spears and warriors plenty for early defense and then by the time you build javs....you get 12 town GA ;D Maya best civ out there for sledgehammer in my opinion(with horse of course). Maya is much more then a defensive civ

Maya much more than a defensive civ? Maya is farthest from a defensive civ, they like to die. Likely the best post ancient civ in the game to date.

My point is best civ period. Not just post ancient. Given horses a strong maya player is unstoppable. Maya does not die easily. Make lots of warriors. Late Ga, send warriors out for sentry defensive horse mobile force and inpressive offesive horse stacks..What more do you want? Especially for ctons and ffa's. Dont tell me you think Maya sucks?

In a cton game, stuck in the middle of the map, with ALL TOP PLAYERS, Surrounded by Aztec, Sumer, Egypt (with Horse) You really would want to Be Maya? I know this situation is a tough one, But my FIRST choice would not be Maya here. The lack of an Archer would cause one of 2 things to happen. Build only 2 or 3 citys, or DIE.

Dear Dusty:
Well a few ideas:
a) the person "overbuilding" their quota might be getting subsidized from a teammate, or
b) the person "overbuilding" might be running a deficit and not caring. The game lets your bank balance go negative. Yes some buildings/units will be disbanded but if you're building 6 units a turn and one is disbanded you're still growing by 5 units.
c) Also certain wonders such as Pyramids, or Great Wall, or Temple or Artemis mean you won't care if your granary, walls, or temples are being sold off, as they are instantly rebuilt.
SPM

SPM spm with them wonders ( pymrds, great wall, temple of artemis, hoover dam, sun tzu) everything they give you cost no gold a turn for the improvement. no cost for granarys with pymrds no cost for temples with temple of artemis so you will never lose that improvement while the wonder is still going till it expries atleast.

A better explanation for big upgrading like 40 chariots to horses or so are stopped science - why should i do math? streets and river - plenty of commerce GA - even more comerce planning ahead - use your GA to build up the stack at end of GA upgrade it - pobably u ll be in minus or at about 0 without GA and a big stack - nm you should attack anyway and in teamers help of teammates for sure
Maya is a great civ to play - thats it its just taken late in teamers cause it dont have this 1 scecial ability - zulu got sucky late traits but can help whole team a lot early - so its taken

i wasn't so much addressing how to build 40 (well timed GA etc.) but how to run a deficit. Also he was concerned about losing granary, temple, etc. when running a deficit. I explained that becomes irrelevant when you have certain wonders (and yes, of course, no upkeep then too). His question said with 6 cities (avg 8 units per city or so) Your answer completes the picture ...

Plus workers, THey probably had 15 workers improving their land for gold(roads) and Units(Mines) and Food.
Its amazeing what every person working a roaded tile will produce in terms of GOLD.
If you build a city on a gold hill, things are that much better as well.
