Hey peoples, I'm new here. I have a couple questions if anyone could help. Oh, and also, to most people, these are probably reallly newbie questions so bare with me please -When attacking a city, it never seems its fair. I have a unit that could have 8.4.2 and the defending unit be 6.2.1 or somthing, and he will end up winning. -Is there anyway to get an entire stack to attack all together, or right after one another? -What type of units are good for taking a city? I CAN do it, its just that there has to be a better way. I am really tired of me attacking with 5-10 units, and he defending with 2, and I end up losing . ...Or it could just be that I'm a supa noob

Welcome to the ladder... 1. Cities can have certain defensive bonus (walls(50%), attacking over river(25%), city on hills(50%) or fortify bonus(25%) or all of them) giving the unit a lot more defence. Usually it's just unluck though since hardly all cities got that. 2. Yes! If you hit the red button over the lower right interface box you can set all units in the stack to attack. If you hit the blue you can set all units of this type (only swordsmen attack and spearmen don't attack). Hint: Use the hotkeys: X for all units stack attack and Ctrl-X for all same type stack attack... 3. All units are good for attacking, but of course units with higher attack power are better But it depends on the situation. If you are gonna surprise him use horses and double move him. If you are gonna walk stack in slowly, cut up roads and then attack the least defended city (note this tactic is not for newbs since it requires you have superior amount of units usually) if this is your plan use a combination of archers and swords and maybe a horse to cut up roads. Btw, im not sure if you know that you can reinforce cities under attacks... if not say so and ill explain how to and how to prevent this.

Okay, this is only for multiplayer...
Go to prefenceres and make sure "animate battles" is on. Now doing attacks each unit will show some combat animation which takes time. Doing this time you can move other units outside of cities into city (assuming enough movement points left) using the "Go to" command (Hotkey: G), note if the unit is directly outside the city (1 square) then you have to use the command "Go to City" (Hotkey: Ctrl-shift-G) and then click on the city name. Yes it's a lot more complicated but if it's an emergency it's well worth it.
Okay, that part was for defending.
When attacking it's a lot more tricky to close down for the reinforcing issue as the defender has the most advantages. The obovious choice is just to cut/block the roads so he can't split his army in 5 cities and then gather all his units in one city when you attack. But there is another option too. If you attack when there is hardly anything left on the timer, then the timer will run out and the battle will speed up preventing the defender from reinforcing. This is especially good with 2 or 3 movement units with 2 cities or more cities in range. The defender has split his army in 2 groups ready to reinforce the city you are planning to attack. It also works with 1 movement units if the cities are placed very tight together.

yeesh, that is confusing Is that for turnless multiplayer mode? (oh yeah, and air-combat is something that I don't completely understand either, if someone could explain that, that would be cool too

There are many facets of this game to learn... the most easy, fun, and prolly best way to start learning is to play a full game, single player, on huge map, and only check "domination victory" and as many computer players as possible. Start on chieftain level (easiest) and go through ancient, medieval, industrial, modern ages... with huge map the game will take about 10-14 hours (not one sitting obviously, save and play over a few days/weeks).

I have played against AI, and I have won. Ironically, I have never played online Soo, I really don't know if I should work on micromanaging, or giant combat. I worked on giant combat, and it worked, but online, I'd think games would drag on more, so now i'm gonna go back and work on micromanaging And I promise, I won't be a "noob", but for the first couple weeks, i'll probably be a "newb"

Best way to win is leave cities empty so that your people stay happy because they hate having troops present in the city. Bad for happiness you will win way more games leaving cities empty and building less troops.

OK, last little question. (no need to start a new thread for this)
What do you need to work on more:
-micromanaging cities, and make you entire civilization up to date with building.
OR
-working primarily on military.

If you can learn to micromanage and get the most out of your cities the rest will come hand in hand . . . but like I said before just leave everything empty and dont even listen to rod. Rod doesn't know what he is saying don't even build settlers. With one city you will do best. Best not to build just remain at one city. Avo is just jealous he couldn't offer such words of wisdom!!
