The following is from the PTW readme" Multiplayer JOIN Troubleshooting: * To JOIN a game via GameSpy or GameSpy Arcade, the following ports must be enabled both on your local router and by your ISP: 6667 (IRC) 3783 (Voice Chat Port) 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat) 28900 (Master Server List Request) 29900 (GP Connection Manager) 29901 (GP Search Manager) 13139 (Custom UDP Pings) 6500 (Query Port) 2302 (DirectPlay) * Further GameSpy connection information can be found at "http://www.gamespyarcade.com/software/support/firewalls.shtml" * To JOIN a game using "Direct IP" or local LAN, only the DirectPlay port (2302) need be enabled. * Firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) present problems for multiplayer games. A new interface for both routers and operating systems called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) greatly ameliorates these problems. If you have a UPnP operating system (Windows ME or Windows XP) and a UPnP router, you "should" be able to join any public game. If you are not UPnP compliant, you must be the first player to join the game, and no other non-UPnP players will be able to join after you. Make sure UPnP services are enabled on your router. Some current routers (Microsoft for example) always enable UPnP. Others (LinkSys for example) offer UPnP services, but disable it by default. * GameSpy prevents you from controlling the order in which players join the game since everyone is launched at the same time. If you are having firewall problems and want to control the join order, use the DirectIP connect method instead. Multiplayer HOST Troubleshooting: * Hosting a game requires that your computer act as a server on the internet and have a public IP address that others can use to join your game. Firewalls and NAT routers prevent this by isolating your local area network (LAN) from the internet. To host a game, you must configure your router to forward certain ports from the internet to your computer. You can do this with port forwarding or DMZ. Port forwarding connects individual external ports to your internal computer. DMZ forwards all (65536) ports to your computer, effectively placing your computer outside the firewall. Using DMZ is simpler, but more dangerous since your computer is now fully exposed to the internet at large. Consult your router documentation for either method. Ports that need to be forwarded are: 13139 (Custom UDP Pings) 6500 (Query Port) 2302 (DirectPlay) * Additionally, your ISP must allow you to host (act as a server) on these ports. Also Civ3PTW uses MS's DirectPlay which is part of the DirectX format. Check out the MS Knowledge Base article on Directx game ports, it's well worth the read as well. support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;240429Cheers CanuckSoldier

I found the keys were:
1. Updating my router firmware to the latest version.
2. Enabling Universal Plug N Play.
I have the following ports enabled: 13139, 6500, 2302. I have no problem hosting.

I have DSL with an external Cisco 675 Router (HW Firewall) I found I had to open a few more ports to get everything to work properly. 6667 3783 27900 28900 29900 29901 13139 6500 6515 2302 will get you in, and able to host games online. BUT..if you want to host direct IP you also need to open a range of ports 2300-2400(both udp & tcp), and 6073 until I opened these two ports I was unable to host an IP game. just my .02 cents Hope it helps someone

2302,3783,6500,6515,6667,13139,27900,28900,29900,29901
The secret is to open both udp / ip as incoming and out going ports. I've never had to open the port ranges you have listed to play direct ip games

In the NAT settings if you open them using the command
set nat entry add (internalIP#) (port#)
then hit enter..it will open them for all protocols. so your suggestion of setting them for one or the other is moot. Until I opened those other ports, IP games didnt work, period.
I believe this will work on any router that uses NAT tables

Does anyone know how to open up the required ports for a DLink DI-614+ router? I sorta understand how at least in the DMZ aspect, but I want to know with port forwarding. Step by Step documentation, or an e-mail to me at silverlightning03@hotmail.com would be great! Thanks a lot! ;D

What did you do to open the ports? Did you remove the winXP firewall? Did you port forward or DMZ the ports in some other software firewall? Your cable modem seems to just be a simple modem and isn't a router as well with any builtin firewall atleast according to it's online manual here: broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/SB4200/downloads/SB4200_User_Guide.pdfBTW, the ports required are listed on page 48 of your C3C manual, there were a couple minor changes from PTW. Let us know what you've done and I'm sure we can help. CS

Here is the updated ports list from the C3C manual:
In order to host a game on the Internet through the built-in GameSpy software, the following ports must be opened: Action Port IRC 6667 Voice Chat Port 3783 Master Server UDP Heartbeat 27900 Master Server List Request 28900 GP Connection Manager 29900 GP Search Manager 29901 Custom UDP Pings 13139 Query Port 6500 DirectPlay 2302 Initial UPD Connection 6073 Inbound Subsequent UPD Inbound and Outbound 2302-2400 If problems occur after opening these ports, you will want to make sure that UPnP services are enabled on your router and that the ISP you are using allows you to host on these ports. If prob-lems persist you may also disable your firewall or place the com-puter in the DMZ of your firewall. Using DMZ or disabling your firewall is simpler, but more dangerous, since your computer is now fully exposed to the Internet at large. In order to connect to a direct connection game or a LAN game the following ports are required to be open: Action Port Initial UPD Connection 6073 Outbound Subsequent UPD Inbound and Outbound 2302-2400 In order to host a direct connection or a LAN game the following ports are required to be open: Action Port Initial UPD Connection 6073 Inbound Subsequent UPD Inbound and Outbound 2302-2400 In order to join a game on the Internet through the built in GameSpy software, the following ports must be opened: Action Port IRC 6667 Voice Chat Port 3783 Master Server UDP Heartbeat 27900 Master Server List Request 28900 GP Connection Manager 29900 GP Search Manager 29901 Custom UDP Pings 13139 Query Port 6500 DirectPlay 2302 Initial UPD Connection 6073 Outbound Subsequent UPD Inbound and Outbound 2302-2400

ok i opened just the 3 ports in "nucks" first reply in this string. my next step was to shut down my firewall and norton virsus autoprotect. unfortunatly i caught the w32jeffo virsus. to add insult to injury i still was unable to host. I think its cool that you guys actually take time to help out. C3C is a small gaming community and i see you guys in the rooms from time to time, so i'd like to learn to host.
