the people who playplay for fun and playing for rank was fun. i never even looked at skill rateings till they were bought up here they never mattered. i dont give a rats ass about skill ratings and most here dont lulus right itll probably kill the ladder Why would changing from a ladder based ranking to a skill based ranking kill the league? People are still going to play for fun. 75% of the Civ4 league is below 1500 skill with the peak of the bell curve at 1400-1450. People that just want to play a casual game can still do so, and people that do want to be to the right of the bell curve can do so to. Ranking systems of any type don't determine wether people have fun or not, that is more related to how people behave, which is a totally separate issue from skill systems. Can you really say that the leapfrog ladder system on Cases promoted fun? CS

I can see jecyl's argument regarding the fun of leapfrogging above more skilled players to grab a juicy high rank. That system does provide hope for those with lower skill who want to see their name in lights. Of course, then when it's their turn to captain a teamer they usually (and wisely) defer to those they know are more likely to pick good players first and make the big plays.
Given that, I don't think most people join the ladder to get high rankings. People join because they see that league games are better games with less chance of cheaters, laggers, quitters, and people who make the games crash or otherwise ruin games and waste everyone's time.
I firmly believe that league play is all about accountability. If you play league games, you are expected to exhibit a certain (sometimes minimal) behavior that respects the other players and the time and effort they are devoting to the game. That respect is codified in the rules and in our customs. Follow those and other players treat you with respect. Fail to follow those rules, and go back to open games where you have to hope and wonder each game whether someone has 1.22, someone else will quit turn 1, two others will team up and someone else will gift his cities after an hour to your nearest opponent.
That accountability is the foundation of this (or pretty much any) league, and it will follow us to our new location. I STRONGLY suggest you come along, too, and try it out even if you don't think you will like it. Give it a fair shot. If you really love this game and this community, I think you will be pleased with the result.

By the way, I'm not positive about the details, but I believe that with the new reporting system that allows for identifying the type of game reported, there will be numerous "rankings" in addition to the overall rank. All rankings will be based on skill level, but now we'll be able to identify the MPT King (or Queen?) as well as UU, fcton, QC, Future, 3CC, and what have you rankings. So there may actually be more chances to see your name in the lights. Just pick some obscure game that Antiquity and PJ don't like and light it up! :-)

The old ranking system unfortunately is a joke now so switching should rather help then kill the ladder. From what I read it looks that ranking by skill can bring some new playing excitement (at least at the beginning) and maybe being in top 10 starts matter again. I have no fun in winning games and getting reports from weak players. Rather prefer to come second or third but beat a bigger guy than me. New system can actually create different way and styles of playing. Instead going for 1st place smaller guys can focus on killing higher ranked player. It will be interesting to follow how or if the new system changes the way people play.
